Traditionally, medical swabs were made from cotton gauze, as this was the most suitable material available. In recent years the development of man made materials or "non-wovens" have had a considerable impact on this market area replacing many of the cotton based products previously used for wound treatment procedures, particularly outside of theatres.
There are recognised benefits in the use of both types of material, depending on the procedure being carried out.
